SUMMARY:May BEC Meeting - Creating a Resilient Alaska Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Creating a Resilient Alaska Workforce \nClick here for the meeting recording. \nFeaturing Speakers Dr. Adam Gove & Dr. Audra Yewchin of The Brain Bus and Dr. Eric Arzubi of Frontier Psychiatry \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPrevention and Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injuries in the Workplace\nAlaska has the highest rate of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in the nation—2–3 times the national average—with 20–25% of workplace injuries involving TBIs\, particularly in construction. While prevention is critical\, many TBIs still occur and often go undiagnosed and untreated\, leading to difficulty returning to work and broader social consequences. This session reviews statewide data\, identifies at-risk populations\, and explains how brain injuries affect cognition and behavior. \nParticipants will learn how to recognize TBIs—especially when symptoms are not visible—and explore treatment approaches aimed at restoring function and supporting return to work. Current return-to-work programs will be reviewed\, along with recommendations for industry-driven improvements. Key takeaways: TBIs can happen to anyone and have significant impacts; prevention is essential but treatment is effective; and proper care supports workforce retention and reduces long-term social consequences. \nSingle Session Approach to Improve Access to Mental Health Services \nAlaska faces significant challenges in accessing mental health care\, particularly in rural and workforce settings where provider shortages limit timely support. At the same time\, most individuals attend only one therapy session\, leaving many needs unmet under traditional care models. Dr. Arzubi will present an innovative\, scalable approach to these challenges using “single session interventions\,” an evidence-based model designed to deliver meaningful therapeutic impact in just one visit. This presentation will explore how this model supports early intervention\, improves engagement in care\, and helps triage individuals based on level of need. Applications for employers\, schools\, and workforce programs will be discussed\, including strategies to support mental health\, reduce risk\, and improve workforce stability.
