EXPERIENCE Maritime – March 2024:

Experience Maritime is a 2 day in-depth career exploration program of jobs ON and AROUND the water for high school youth ages 15+ or 16+. No experience or background necessary – this is for any youth wanting to learn about this exciting industry. In 2024, we held sessions in Anchorage, Sitka, and Seward. This program is sponsored by grant funding and is offered to Alaskan high school students at no cost. Sessions are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm on each day.

Anchorage session – 3/11/24 Monday – 3/12/24 Tuesday; Must be age 16+. Session will take place at the Alaska Safety Alliance in addition to field trips in the Anchorage area for hands-on maritime career experiences.

Park, pick up/drop off at Alaska Safety Alliance 2600 Cordova St. Suite 105

8:30-4:30 on both days.

Anchorage Sessions will include:

  • Virtual Reality Tug experience, and tour of FV NORTHERN HAWK
  • Tour of the Port of Alaska in Anchorage
  • Board and tour large-scale shipping vessels, TOTE and Matson
  • Lunch aboard TOTE
  • Tour Copper River Seafood processing plant with a focus on skilled trades jobs
  • Opportunity to network with maritime professionals including captains, engineers, fish harvesters and seafood processing professionals

Seward session – 3/14/24 Thurs – 3/15/24 Friday; Must be age 15+. Sessions will take place at AVTEC in addition to field trips in the Seward area for hands-on maritime career experiences.

Park, pick/up drop off at AVTEC. First Lake Building at 809 Second Avenue. Room 117

8:30-4:30 on both days.

The Seward session will include:

  • Experiences on AVTEC’s full-mission bridge simulator – one of the most robust maritime training simulator suites in the United States.
  • Career talk at the Seward Sea Life Center
  • Harbor tour and conversation with Seward Harbormaster
  • Jag Shipyard Tour – the second largest shipyard north of Seattle.
  • Tour of the Alaska Marine Highway System Ferry, Tustumena
  • Opportunity to network with maritime professionals including captains, engineers, fish harvesters and seafood processing professionals

Sitka session – 3/17/24 Sun – 3/18/24 Monday; ; Must be age 15+. Sessions will take place at UAS in addition to field trips in the Sitka area for hands-on maritime career experiences.

Park, pick up/drop off 8:30-4:30 on both days.at UAS Sitka, 1332 Seward Ave. Please enter the building on the ball field side and go upstairs to Room 230.

Session will include:

  • Damage Control Simulation with the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association – WEAR RAIN GEAR AND BOOTS
  • Alaska Marine Lines/Lynden Cargo yard tour
  • Sitka Harbor tour and conversation with harbormaster
  • Tour of Allen Marine’s ship yard
  • Lunch aboard dry dock vessel at Allen Marine
  • Opportunity to network with maritime professionals including captains, engineers, fish harvesters and seafood processing professionals
