North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC)

NSTC Provides Essential North Slope Training

Starting September 1, 2025, the North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC) will no longer issue physical cards for the NSTC Unescorted training course. Instead, you will receive an electronic certificate (e-certificate). This e-certificate shows you have completed the NSTC Unescorted training course, which is a basic introduction for anyone working on the North Slope.

Please note that each job or worksite may require additional training beyond the NSTC Unescorted training course.

 NSTC Unescorted E-certificates

Effective September 1, 2025, the Alaska Safety Alliance (ASA) will issue NSTC Unescorted certificates in a digital format (e-certificates). These e-certificates enhance security, accessibility, and convenience compared to physical cards. E-certificates can be accessed in two ways:

Existing physical cards will remain valid. However, replacements will now be issued electronically. To request a replacement card (e-certificate), please fill out a Replace My NSTC Card form.

NSTC North Slope Training Cooperative

About NSTC

NSTC was founded in 1997 when BP and ARCO field managers on Alaska’s North Slope signed the NSTC Health, Safety, and Environmental Guidelines. The NSTC Unescorted training program became the mandatory minimum requirement for all North Slope Operator companies and contractor personnel. Today, NSTC is a collaborative training effort funded by ConocoPhillips Alaska Inc., Hilcorp Alaska, LLC, and Oil Search (Alaska), LLC, a subsidiary of Santos Limited.

What is an Electronic NSTC Certificate?

The NSTC e-certificate is a credential issued to individuals who complete the NSTC Unescorted training. It meets the minimum training requirements for access to most North Slope work sites.

Is my existing physical NSTC card still valid?

Yes. Physical cards issued in the past remain valid. However, if you lose your card, only a digital version (e-certificate) will be issued going forward.

Is my past training still valid?

If you have completed NSTC Unescorted after 2022, you are up to date, and your training is still valid. If your training was completed before 2022, you must complete the 2022 Alaska Safety Handbook (ASH) Update to be current.

How do I access my NSTC certificate

Within 48 hours of completing training, your certificate will appear in your account on:

  • ASAOnline, or
  • The BIS Safety App, under the “Completed” section.
    • BIS Safety is available for both iOS and Android devices.

Note: You will not receive notification when your certificate is available.

What if I can’t see my certificate 48 hours after completion?

Contact ASA support:
info@alaskasafetyalliance.org | 907-770-5250

Can I access my certificate offline?

Yes, but only if you download it to your device while online. The BIS Safety app may not display the certificate without internet access unless it is saved locally.

Do I need to print my certificate?

E-certificates are accepted by North Slope Operators. Check with your employer for printing requirements.

How do I share my certificate?

There are two ways to share your e-certificate:

  1. In ASAOnline:
    1. Go to your Home page.
    2. Find the dark blue “Completed” row.
    3. Click “Forward Certificates”, select NSTC Unescorted, and select submit.
  1. In the BIS Safety App:
    1. Go to “Completed.”
    2. Tap the yellow medallion next to your NSTC Unescorted training.
    3. Download or email the certificate.
Where can I access my other NSTC course completion records such as H2S/FeS?

These records are available as separate certificates in ASAOnline or the BIS Safety app.

Will my other training, such as company-specific training, show on my certificate?

No. The NSTC certificate only displays NSTC Unescorted training.

Why is my NSTC number missing from my certificate?

Some legacy records didn’t include NSTC numbers. If yours is missing, contact ASA for a new NSTC number.

Will Operators accept the new NSTC certificate?

Yes. North Slope Operators accept both physical cards and e-certificates.

Record Validator

What is an Electronic NSTC Certificate?

The NSTC e-certificate is a credential issued to individuals who complete the NSTC Unescorted training. It meets the minimum training requirements for access to most North Slope work sites.

I am a designated record validator for my company, how can I validate an NSTC certificate?
  • All NSTC certificates in ASA Online and the BIS Safety app have been approved by the Alaska Safety Alliance as acceptable records and authorized by the NSTC Operators Group.
  • Records sent directly from mailer@bissafety.app are also valid.

If you are being presented with a certificate external to the BIS Safety app:

  • Ensure the name displayed on the certificate matches the individual presenting the certificate.
  • A unique NSTC number will be displayed on the certificate.
  • Review the date of completion. If the completion date is before July 2022, verify the individual has also taken the 2022 NSTC Alaska Safety Handbook Update training (certificate also accessible in the BIS Safety app).
  • Please use the image below as a reference NSTC certificate.

I am questioning the authenticity of an NSTC certificate. What should I do?

Email a screenshot or copy of the credential to info@alaskasafetyalliance.org. ASA will validate the record.

How do I verify a worker’s NSTC completion if they have a physical card?

Physical cards issued from 1996–2020 (paper) and 2020–2025 (plastic) are still valid.

  • Paper cards – Issued 1996-2020
    • Paper cards are a tri-fold record log.
    • The first page will contain a unique NSTC number and the individual’s name.
    • The printed Company Name does not have to be current to be valid.
    • The second page will have lines for the NSTC Unescorted training and the NSTC H2S/FeS training. Valid records will include the course completion date, the worker’s initial, and the instructor’s number. Records without all three of these qualifications are invalid.
    • The third page has empty lines for additional NSTC training. These records must also have the course completion date, the worker’s initial, and the instructor’s number.
    • Paper cards were discontinued before the release of the latest Alaska Safety Handbook (ASH) update. Completion of the 2022 ASH update will be shown as a holographic ASH 2022 sticker on the third page.
  • Plastic – Issued 2020-2025
    • The individual’s name will appear on the front of the card. On the back of the card, there will be the individual’s name, their unique NSTC number, and the card’s issue date..
    • The completion dates for different courses are displayed on the front of the card in the same line as the course name. You may see completion dates on replacement cards that are from before this time, but you should NOT see a Date Issued from before 2020.
    • If the NSTC Unescorted completion date is before July 2022, verify the individual has also taken the 2022 NSTC Alaska Safety Handbook (ASH) Update training. This may either be printed on the card as a date or shown as a holographic ASH 2022 sticker in the appropriate line.

Variations exist across the various iterations of these cards. If you are questioning a card’s authenticity, contact ASA at info@alaskasafetyalliance.org or call 907-770-5250.
